The Jump Off
Saturday 12/4 @ 4am we head to the airport! Bags packed and ready to go for our 6am flight!!
Jason practices his Mexican style, I temporarily changed his name to Guillermo Take off from Albany Our first layover was in Cleveland, Ohio. Home of the Rock Hall which Kim got to visit in 2008. We ran across an oversized Ramones guitar Second layover was in Houston, Texas where we grabbed a beer and some foods at the Sky Box before we boarded for Cancun On the avion (plane) we completed our customs and immigration forms the first view of the beach in cancun.
"We're in Mexico!"
After our many flights, we landed around 3pm in the Yucatan.. Cancun specifically! Here's Jason with a view of our ride in the background, and below is the first thing you see when you exit the avion.
Once through immigration, even prior to reaching customs, there is duty free shop. We browsed some prices as reference. Well hello, $19 Jameo & $28 Glen Fiddich! Ahh.. we resisted the urge however, as we needed our luggage and to actually get into the country before our vacation could begin. We grabbed our bags and headed towards the chaos ahead. Unorganized crowds pushing their way towards the customs area. We stuck together and waited in line for the final check, finally pushing the big button for approval. Green for go, red for stop everything and prepare to have your being and belongs searched. Verde it was!
As you leave the airport there's a festive band welcoming you with some classic Mexican musico.. as well as many locals holding up signs for USA and various resorts, trying to confuse any tourist who has yet to book a shuttle or research their their travel plans in general.
A clip of us arriving at the resort.. soundtrack by Twisted Sister
We wandered around the resort Saturday night as well as Sunday morning before hitting Playa Del Carmen for the afternoon.
Here are a couple shots of the beach in front of our hoteland one that does no justice to the massive pools here
Since we just got in, we weren't able to hit a market yet. Saturday night we made the mistake of buying a six pack of Pacifico from the store on our grounds.. for something like $15 usd which is almost triple the regular price. We ordered a pizza from Havana Moon which was much more reasonable, $175 pesos, around $14. So Sunday morning we opted for the Mayan breakfast.. along with the pushy Timeshare presentation. Can complain about getting this view and food for free! We saw some alligators before taking the shuttle to Playa Del Carmen! Today we're off to the Tulum ruins. We'll pics from there and our trip to Playa from yesterday after we get back. Internet is slow and it's hard to get everything up quickly! Love you all!!After breakfast we took off for Playa. It's about a 20minuteride but there's a shuttle directly from the Mayan Palace that drops us off in a parking lot on 6th and 30th for 40 pesos, $3.24 usd. We purchased some cigs for $33 peso a pack, that's $2.67 and strolled around 5th Ave for awhile! There are hundreds of little shops where the workers yell out for you to come, "I got what you want here, lady" and "Hey, Mr. tattoos. You want some tattoos" haha we reply with "No, gracias" and learn quickly to act like you would in NYC and just keep moving. Lack of eye contact is key.
We posted up at "Tropical" for a 2 for 1 happy hour of Cuba Libre (Ron/Rum, coke and lime) and the standard Pinacolada for $80 pesos, 2 mixed drinks for $6.48. With our first buzz in Mexico, we made our way to the playa (beach) in Playa which is a block down from 5th. Then wandered around the village some more, finding some beautiful garden coves and funny Mexican signageHungry and look for some real authentic Mexican food, we walked up a few blocks from the main strip and found a sweet resturaunt called Mr. Chille. The owner was exceptionally nice and we chatted about tequila and places the locals go to shop and drink. He gave us some great pointers on getting around without paying exuberant tour prices.
With an hour or so left to catch the shuttle we went towards the market to purchase some groceries for cooking at the aptartment, catching some great local spot on the way In line at the market With a little time to kill before we left Playa, we stopped at a small cafe and had a few Dos Equis for $20 pesos each. And met a new friend before we took off.Sunday night Jason made some delicious quesadillas con queso
as well as an amazing breakfast before we headed to Tulum Monday morningTuesday J made some awesome guacamole and salsa using fresh Mexican veggies
For dinner we ate the above with some rice, beans and a couple quesadillasBreakfast Wednesday morning was a big one as we prepared for our journey to Valladolid. Un pequito (a little) left over rice, huevos (eggs) with veggies and an egg burrito.. and of course, some Pacifico
Most tours to Tulum would be approximitly $100 for the two of us. Being that the ruins are only an hour from Playa we decided doing it on our own would be a lot cheaper, and we were right. We took the Mayan Palace shuttle back to Playa and found the bus station where we were able to purchase two round trip tickets for about $10 usd. We had a little time to kill before the bus departed so we ventured down to the beach again for some gorgeous am rays
On the bus we passed this guy catching little seista on the back of a garbage truckWe knew we did something right being the only Americans on the bus! It made two stops at X-caret / X-plor (a eco theme park, pronounced eesh-cAret) and Xel-ha (shell-ha) and dropped us off next to the highway in a little village where you had the option to taxi or take a small hike into the main ruin area.
Opting for the hike and as it was a beautiful morning and we want to experience as much of the country as possible. We bought our tickets for $51 pesos at the entrance and headed inside Planning our route to skip the first entrance infollowing the path to the top of the stairs for a breathtaking view
Tuesday we stayed in the gates of the Mayan Palace and made plans for renting a car Wednesday to drive across the Yucatan to Valladolid for an overnight in order to visit Chichen Itza and Coba ruins on Thursday.
Kim made up some fresh fruit salad and chocolate chip bagels and we ate breakfast on the beach with our pitcher of Rum and tropical juices. We played beach volleyball for awhile
Pool bar~ J left some cigs in his pocket, bound to happen at one point on this trip! On to Valladolid!Jason & Pepe, our little car we rented for our voyage across the Yucatan

Riding on the ferryStraight off the boat after checking into our hotel at the Coral Princess we enjoyed some cervasas and nachos con queso y frijoles negros
Sunday morning we got up and met the hombres who rented us Charlie, our little scooter for the week We took our first ride around downtown San Miguel and stopped at El Museo for a grand rooftop breakfast. Love being the only Americans in a restaurant full of local familias! Mixed tropical juices! After breakfast we set out a little food shopping. Starting at El Mercado, the local fruit and veggie market on 25th and 1st. We got 5 tomates (tomatos), 4 aquacate (avocados), 4 limas (limes) and a large cebolla (onion) for 50 pesos (a little under $5 usd) From there we headed to the Chandrul market, south of the downtown area. There is a large Mega store which is in partnership with Cost-co and has bi-lingual staff with English signs throughout the tienda (store) but we opted for the authentic experience instead. It's like the Mexican Price Chooper but cheaper! Kim back packed the groceries and Jason held the beer on the bottom of the scooter on the ride back Stocked fridge!
On Tuesday we took the scooter up to San Gervasio, the most important Mayan ruins on Cozumel Island. Here's a short clip of us riding, then some pics
&
On Thursday we took the scooter up to Paradise Beach club
Si, tropical drinks For $12 usd you get a wrist band and access to their large water toys right in the ocean; slides, trampolines, mountain climbing and more We swung through San Fransisco on the way back to San Miguel Where we had an awesome dinner and did some shopping for our amigos back home Jason and our scooter somewhere in the middle We stopped at Cozumel's airport on the way home to check out the painted planesOur last full day on the Island we sprung for a long lasting souvenir... tattoos at Pura Tinta:
Kim went first, getting her Mayan astrology sign: Kumk'u (Cancer)
Jason went with a more elaborate drawing by one of the artists there.. that took over 7 hours to complete..needless to say Kim was quite drunk by the time he finished
Jason hooked up dinner with some homemade veggie enchiladas5am waiting for our cab to bring us to the ferry
We realized we had too much stuff when Jason was forced to wear two hats homeAfter our 45 minute ferry ride we stopped in Playa Del Carmen for one last breakfast by the beach
Then took an hour cab ride up to Cancun airport.. it was 10am and our flight left at noon, so there wasn't much left for us to do but bid Mexico a found farewell and begin drinking Bye bye, Mexico. We'll be back!
