The Jump Off

Google_earth_yucatan

Almost two weeks away from departure and we're getting very excited! Research and planning has happened for weeks now, using Evernote to create a workbook of such findings. Pages highlighting things to do before we leave, what to bring, what to do while were there, easy commuting around the peninsula, and so on. Since deciding that a travel blog will be our best way to document our daily activities and experiences while journeying through Mexico!

For the next couple weeks, posts will be containing culture, history and modern information on the Yucatan and Quintana Roo as well as some key points of interest we'll be looking for while traveling. Gradually throwing in a little Espanol and some Mayan terms of significance. Great background for family, friends and any other travelers that stumble upon this posterous.

We jump off from Albany International with a few layovers in Ohio and Texas before flying into Aeropuerto International de Cancun. Spending our first week in Playa Del Carmen and second week on Cozumel Island. Most traveling around the mainland will take place during our first week, as Cozumel will have enough sights to keep us busy for our final week! Although there is a airport on the island, we'll be flying back from Cancun. Check out the map for locations we've pinpointed on Google Earth.

Basically, the Yucatan Pennisla is the entire southeastern region of Mexico holding the states of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo. Merida is the capitol of Yucatan and Chetumal is the capitol of Quintana Roo. Most of our trip will take place in Quintana Roo which is divided into four regions; Cancun, Riviera Maya, Maya Zone and the great Coasta Maya. In turn, we can say most of our trip will take place in the Riviera Maya.

The weather in the Yucatan is hot and humid year round.  The rainy season is mid-August through mid-October, when there’s afternoon showers most days. The best time to visit is during the dryer, slightly cooler months between November and March. Hurricane season runs from June through November. Sounds like we picked the perfect time to visit as December's high average appears to run between 75 - 90, dropping to a low of 60 on some nights.

Playa Del Carmen is the third largest city in Quintana Roo. It lays on the east coast directly across from the Island of Cozumel, about 40 miles South of Cancun. Playa is increasingly becoming a popular tourist city. The town is small enough to walk almost anywhere you need to go, and the main calle (street) is called Quinta Avenida, 5th Avenue!

For years Cozumel has been ranked among the top five dive destination in the world. I've read various statistics from multiple sources stating the island is approximately 28 - 29 miles long and 9 - 11 miles wide.

Can't wait to explore the cities, Mayan Ruins, cenotes and all the other impressive places the Yucatan has to offer. Make sure to check back for updates before we take off on the 4th!

Aeropuerto, por favor!

Saturday 12/4 @ 4am we head to the airport! Bags packed and ready to go for our 6am flight!!

Our first layover was in Cleveland, Ohio. Home of the Rock Hall which Kim got to visit in 2008. We ran across an oversized Ramones guitar

Second layover was in Houston, Texas where we grabbed a beer and some foods at the Sky Box before we boarded for Cancun

Estamos en Mexico!

"We're in Mexico!"

After our many flights, we landed around 3pm in the Yucatan.. Cancun specifically! Here's Jason with a view of our ride in the background, and below is the first thing you see when you exit the avion.

Once through immigration, even prior to reaching customs, there is duty free shop. We browsed some prices as reference. Well hello, $19 Jameo & $28 Glen Fiddich! Ahh.. we resisted the urge however, as we needed our luggage and to actually get into the country before our vacation could begin.

100_0851

We grabbed our bags and headed towards the chaos ahead. Unorganized crowds pushing their way towards the customs area. We stuck together and waited in line for the final check, finally pushing the big button for approval. Green for go, red for stop everything and prepare to have your being and belongs searched. Verde it was!

100_0852

As you leave the airport there's a festive band welcoming you with some classic Mexican musico.. as well as many locals holding up signs for USA and various resorts, trying to confuse any tourist who has yet to book a shuttle or research their their travel plans in general.

Mayan Palace

We wandered around the resort Saturday night as well as Sunday morning before hitting Playa Del Carmen for the afternoon.

Since we just got in, we weren't able to hit a market yet. Saturday night we made the mistake of buying a six pack of Pacifico from the store on our grounds.. for something like $15 usd which is almost triple the regular price. We ordered a pizza from Havana Moon which was much more reasonable, $175 pesos, around $14. So Sunday morning we opted for the Mayan breakfast.. along with the pushy Timeshare presentation. Can complain about getting this view and food for free!

We saw some alligators before taking the shuttle to Playa Del Carmen!

100_0890
Today we're off to the Tulum ruins. We'll pics from there and our trip to Playa from yesterday after we get back. Internet is slow and it's hard to get everything up quickly! Love you all!!

Playa Del Carmen - Sunday 12/5

After breakfast we took off for Playa. It's about a 20minuteride but there's a shuttle directly from the Mayan Palace that drops us off in a parking lot on 6th and 30th for 40 pesos, $3.24 usd. We purchased some cigs for $33 peso a pack, that's $2.67 and strolled around 5th Ave for awhile! There are hundreds of little shops where the workers yell out for you to come, "I got what you want here, lady" and "Hey, Mr. tattoos. You want some tattoos" haha we reply with "No, gracias" and learn quickly to act like you would in NYC and just keep moving. Lack of eye contact is key.

100_0896
We posted up at "Tropical" for a 2 for 1 happy hour of Cuba Libre (Ron/Rum, coke and lime) and the standard Pinacolada for $80 pesos, 2 mixed drinks for $6.48.

With our first buzz in Mexico, we made our way to the playa (beach) in Playa which is a block down from 5th.

100_0897
100_0898
Then wandered around the village some more, finding some beautiful garden coves and funny Mexican signage

100_0915

Hungry and look for some real authentic Mexican food, we walked up a few blocks from the main strip and found a sweet resturaunt called Mr. Chille. The owner was exceptionally nice and we chatted about tequila and places the locals go to shop and drink. He gave us some great pointers on getting around without paying exuberant tour prices.

100_0905
With an hour or so left to catch the shuttle we went towards the market to purchase some groceries for cooking at the aptartment, catching some great local spot on the way

Cooking at the Palace

Sunday night Jason made some delicious quesadillas con queso

100_0995

Breakfast Wednesday morning was a big one as we prepared for our journey to Valladolid. Un pequito (a little) left over rice, huevos (eggs) with veggies and an egg burrito.. and of course, some Pacifico

100_0998

Traveling to Tulum

Most tours to Tulum would be approximitly $100 for the two of us. Being that the ruins are only an hour from Playa we decided doing it on our own would be a lot cheaper, and we were right. We took the Mayan Palace shuttle back to Playa and found the bus station where we were able to purchase two round trip tickets for about $10 usd. We had a little time to kill before the bus departed so we ventured down to the beach again for some gorgeous am rays

100_0925
100_0924
On the bus we passed this guy catching little seista on the back of a garbage truck

Tulum!

We knew we did something right being the only Americans on the bus! It made two stops at X-caret / X-plor (a eco theme park, pronounced eesh-cAret) and Xel-ha (shell-ha) and dropped us off next to the highway in a little village where you had the option to taxi or take a small hike into the main ruin area.

100_0927
Opting for the hike and as it was a beautiful morning and we want to experience as much of the country as possible.

100_0928
We bought our tickets for $51 pesos at the entrance and headed inside

Tuesday we stayed in the gates of the Mayan Palace and made plans for renting a car Wednesday to drive across the Yucatan to Valladolid for an overnight in order to visit Chichen Itza and Coba ruins on Thursday.

100_1262
After breakfast we set out a little food shopping. Starting at El Mercado, the local fruit and veggie market on 25th and 1st. We got 5 tomates (tomatos), 4 aquacate (avocados), 4 limas (limes) and a large cebolla (onion) for 50 pesos (a little under $5 usd)

100_1265
100_1266
From there we headed to the Chandrul market, south of the downtown area. There is a large Mega store which is in partnership with Cost-co and has bi-lingual staff with English signs throughout the tienda (store) but we opted for the authentic experience instead. It's like the Mexican Price Chooper but cheaper!
